This paper focuses on the Malay peasantry of Rembau, Negeri Sembilan, and deals specifically with continuity and change within the domains of kinship, economics, and religion since the late nineteenth century. Central to the analysis presented is the argument that modernization has led not only to the institutional differentiation and polarization of adat and Islam, but also to the segmentation and secularization of the adat concept.
