About the publication

  • Though widely hailed as the first conservative triumph since the turn of the century, the Bhumjaithai Party’s victory in Thailand’s 8 February 2026 general election was not a victory of conservatism, even if it was a victory by and for conservatives.
  • While the party may have been perceived as a conservative choice at the time of the election, there is scant evidence that its victory was driven by a resurgence in conservative values, beliefs or worldviews among Thai voters.
  • Instead, Bhumjaithai’s electoral dominance likely owes to the strength of its candidates and their networks, supported by incumbency advantages, the consolidation of local votes, and an electoral system that allows for significant disproportionality between votes and seats.
  • Bhumjaithai has thus emerged as a credible vehicle for entrenching conservative rule without having to become a mass conservative party.
  • This governing arrangement has the potential to usher in political stability in Thailand in the short term, but over the longer term the party’s dependence on patronage could prove destabilizing and pose an obstacle to effective governance.
This book is on the press and will be available for purchase from 16 October 2026.
