About the publication
Advances in digital technology has revolutionized the world, and Indonesia is not an exception. With internet penetration rate at around 88% and its population among the most active users of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok in the world, Indonesia is experiencing an era of digital disruptions. This volume seeks to unravel the extent to which digital technology has disrupted social and cultural life in Indonesia, in the sense of reorganizing the modalities of social behaviour. Digital Disruptions examines the impact of significant technosocial changes across major sectors in Indonesia, from the economy (FinTech industry, Gojek platform) to religious life (Islam, Christianity and Confucianism going online), politics and governance (Jokowi’s use of digital media and implementation of digital governance, the development of smart cities, virtual policing), and leisure (online animation, eSports). This volume also serves as a guide for understanding how the Covid-19 pandemic has served as a catalyst for the disruptive changes, and for navigating the continuing digital transformation of Indonesia.
