About the publication

Southeast Asia: Challenges of the 21st Century -- the report of a conference held to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies -- presents the deliberations of eminent international affairs and economics scholars and practitioners on the challenges, opportunities, and problems of one of the most dynamic regions in the world.

Participants at the conference discussed the following:
          * The balance of power that was likely to emerge in the East Asian region.
          * The economic forces that would shape that balance.
          * The strategies of growth that the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) should adopt in the rapidly changing international economic environment.

This report summarizes the views of participants on these broad conceptual issues, as well as their animated debate on more immediate matters like the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA), Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC), and the East Asian Economic Caucus (EAEC).
