About the publication
If all countries follow a strategy of food self-sufficiency on the one hand an of exporting their surpluses on the other, conflicts will be inevitable. This volume contains five studies of scholars from ASEAN and Europe that address various aspects of trade in tropical agricultural products between ASEAN and the European Community (EC). A comprehensive background picture of the agricultural sector in the ASEAN economies is given, and the EC strategy of giving preferences to the so-called Lome countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific is described. The negative aspects of the Common Agricultural Policy of the EC are analysed in a simulation model, and in a further contribution the specific impact of the Lome Conventions on the ASEAN countries is studied.
