Nicholas Tarling is a retired Professor of History from the University of Auckland, where he was also Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Chairman of the Deans Committee, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. He was the founder and president of the New Zealand Asian Studies Society (NZASIA). In retirement he has been a Fellow of the New Zealand Asia Institute and has served as Director of the Institute and later of the International Office.
