Yoneo Ishii

Yoneo Ishii has had an exceptionally distinguished career in Southeast Asian Studies. He has been Director of the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies at Kyoto University and Professor of Southeast Asian History at Sophia University, and is currently President of Kanda University of International Studies in Chiba, near Tokyo. In addition to many publications in Japanese, his books in English include Sangha, State and Society: Thai Buddhism in History (1986), as author; and Thailand: A Rice-Growing Society (1978), and The Computer Concordance to the Law of the Three Seals (5 volumes, 1990), as editor. Among many distinctions, he was President of the International Association of Historians of Asia in 1993-94 and received the Fukuoka Prize for Asian Studies in 1994.
