Ishii Yoneo (1929-2010) was one of Japan's most respected scholars of Thailand and Southeast Asia. After a stint in the Foreign Ministry, Ishii-sensei returned to academe and was one of the founding members of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Kyoto University in 1965, later assuming the directorship (1985-90).
