Rhys Richards is a Pacific maritime historian, writing on Pacific arts and artifacts. Until he retired in 1999 he served with the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including as High Commissioner to the Solomon Islands (199699) and as a diplomat in the first New Zealand Embassy in the Philippines (197275).
