ISEAS Policy on the Use of AI

Note that we do not accept manuscripts authored in full or in part by Artificial Intelligence (AI)—the author must be a legal person or entity.

However, ISEAS acknowledges the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for research and academic writing. Nevertheless, as a research centre dedicated to excellence, ISEAS requires transparency and accountability when it comes to the deployment of AI.

The points below outline ISEAS’s policy on the use of AI:

  •       Authorship: AI tools may not be listed as authors or co-authors of any publication. Only a person(s) may be acknowledged as the author(s) of a submitted work.

  •         Declaration: Authors must declare any use of AI or AI-assisted tools in their work. The specific AI tool used (including its version number), how it was used, and the reason for its use must be stated clearly at the point of submission.

  •          Technological Assistance, not Analytical Insight: AI tools may be used as technological assistance to correct grammar, enhance data presentation, or improve editing. Such usage must be declared upon submission. AI tools may not be used to offer analytical insights, research conclusions, or policy recommendations.

  •          Accountability: Authors will be accountable for the use of AI in their work. They will be held responsible for the accuracy, factuality, and academic integrity of the data and statements generated by AI in their work.

  •          Editorial Right: ISEAS reserve the right to reject submissions that we feel do not abide by the guidelines above.

  •          Policy Responsiveness: AI tools and their functions are continuously evolving. Likewise, ISEAS will regularly review this policy to ensure its relevance.

AI Policy for Editors (Including External Editors) and Peer Reviewers

Editors’ use of manuscripts in Generative AI systems may pose a risk to confidentiality, proprietary rights and data, including personally identifiable information. Therefore, editors must not upload files, images or information from unpublished manuscripts into Generative AI tools. Failure to comply with this policy may infringe upon the rightsholder’s intellectual property.

Peer reviewers are chosen experts in their fields and should not be using Generative AI for analysis or to summarize submitted articles or portions thereof in the creation of their reviews. As such, peer reviewers must not upload unpublished manuscripts or book proposals, including any associated files, images or information, into Generative AI tools. Generative AI may only be utilized to assist with improving review language, but peer reviewers will at all times remain responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of their reviews.
