"It provides a most valuable compilation of recent data and some current thinking on the positions and roles of women in present-day Indonesia" (
Aseasuk News).
"Key issues and debates are addressed by more than 20 contributors -- Indonesian and Western, male and female, principally from academic fields although with non-government and some civil service input. The framework of analysis is the potential for increasing equity in the climate of political transition. Changing attitudes, labour issues, public life, and the impact of increased regional autonomy are prevalent themes. Reports from Indonesian activists are especially useful illustrations of recent developments" (Australian Journal of Political Science).
"This collection of articles is fairly comprehensive on issues of women's empowerment that could be pertinent to all women irrespective of nationality" (Awareness).
"While the articles focus on women, this volume is so packed with information on recent events and changes that it should be consulted by anyone desiring to keep abreast of contemporary currents in Indonesia" (Indonesia).
"Women in Indonesia gives an excellent coverage of gender issues and development in Indonesia.... The book deals with subjects rarely written about in the Soeharto era, for example, a discussion of gays and lesbians in Indonesian society. The publication of the book is timely, since it coincides with the election of Megawati Sukarnoputri as Indonesia's first female President" (Asian-Pacific Economic Literature).
"Megawati's shift to power was a time of hope .... The 20 articles highlight this hope mingled with an awareness of the complex and often contradictory social, economic and political conditions that mutually influence the spaces available for women. The collection, introduced by the editors' comprehensive overview of the issues, offers a wide variety of empirical analyses of closely inter-related themes" (Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies).
Indonesia now has its first woman President -- Megawati Sukarnoputri. The debates surrounding her elevation to the presidency brought issues of gender and politics to the forefront of the public agenda, raising crucial questions about the role that women are to play in public life in post-Soeharo Indonesia. The struggle to achieve a democratic transition following the fall of Soeharto's New Order in 1998 has also focused attention on issues of equity and gender justice. This book explores gender relations in Indonesia and presents an overview of the political, social, cultural and economic situation of women. The volume is Indonesia Assessment 2001, a result of the annual Indonesia Update conference organized by the Indoneisa Project and the Department of Political and Social Change at the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, ANU.
